Guide to LP Condition
Wherever possible we listen to all records we sell and comment accordingly. On occasion a record may only be graded visually and will be stated as such. All lps are despatched in a new self-seal plastic outer cover.
As some collectors are interested in record covers as well as the condition of the vinyl itself we have two grading systems to guide you. It's hard finding the perfect record! We are loathe to define any as MINT however if a record is NEW it can be considered as such.
For other non-new previously enjoyed records, most of which are now several years old, please refer to the following guides.
As with any Planet Retro items if you require further more specific clarification, do contact us.
Vinyl Condition
Excellent - Vinyl appears almost unmarked and in top condition. Possibly unplayed. Virtually no trace of groove wear with only minimal traces of use and handling.
Very Good - Obviously well played, but still enjoyable. 1 or 2 minor scuffs or small hairline scratches. Definitely no skips or jumps.
Good - Well worn, visible scratches but listenable. Expect some surface noise and 1 or 2 small jumps.
Fair - Visually a little worse than GOOD. Definite surface noise including clicks and significant jumps. Good for a jukebox copy.
Label Value Only - Label value only or an interesting item for the collector. Not great to listen too and significant visual damage. As is.
Cover Condition
Excellent - Cover appears almost unmarked and in top condition. Minimal traces of use and handling. Kept in pristine condition.
Very good - Minor edge wear and/or fading. Overall still tidy.
Good - More noticeable edge and corner wear with possibly the odd scrape, tear or age spots. Imagery still vibrant and attractive.
Fair - Some significant wear. Cover has spine splits/tears/noticeable wear or a significant amount of writing or age-related discolouration.
Past its Best By Date - For the die-hard collector only or for laminating to use as tablemats or pics for your mojo pad! Cover is badly worn and has splits/tears/writing or overall damage. Possible environmental damage such as water or mildew. As is.
Guide to Clothing Condition
Please remember that vintage fabrics are like people - they have unique personalities and reflect their age in different ways.
Any imperfections are meant to add to their charm and authenticity. We do not offer up garments that are beyond all hope especially if there is still some value in the fabric itself, however time does not permit us to undertake repairs to garments (nor so are we professionals in that respect).
Once purchased garments may well benefit from a little updating or repair work performed by your local tailor! Please also note that some of our clothes are handmade and not necessarily professionally constructed to an exact degree! Be sure to double check size measurements as we source garments from all over the globe.
Excellent - Garment appears almost unworn and in top condition. Possibly never used.
Very Good - Used, but still enjoyable and plenty of life left. No dramatic damage apparent.
Good - Overall very tidy. Normal signs of wear beginning to appear, especially given the age of the garment. This may include some marks or damaged areas. Possibly showing signs of repetitive washing over the years however definitely wearable.
Fair - Visually a little worse than GOOD. Definite signs of wear. Possible reconstruction required in places. Could show obvious marks (which will be described). Interior lining may sustain some staining. Still a worthwhile find in a pleasing fabric, cut or colour.
Fabric/Trims Value Only The age, lack of tailoring expertise or damage sustained deems this garment unsuitable for immediate wear in its current condition. However the garment has potential for restoration or reconstruction to make better use of its materials i.e. buttons, motifs, zips or fabric. As is.
Guide to Reading Items Condition
While we specialise in 1950s and 1960s science fiction paperbacks we try to offer a broad range of reading materials.
If you are after a particular title, genre or author, do enquire as you never know your luck and we may be able to source items for you.
Below is a general guide to the conditions of the books and ephemera we offer. We cannot extensively evaluate a book, and individual book condition varies. All our books are readable and usable for research.
Many of our books are very old and will likely suffer from foxing (this describes the brown spots that gradually form on paper. According to the Library of Congress, foxing is often caused by high humidity and temperature extremes where books and paper are stored). Sometimes the first few pages of a book have important personal history written on them. We do not remove these, nor trim corners of pages to remove pricings etc. We feel this is unnecessary and may well affect the value of an item. Even if they are worn this is part of the history of the book. Where a book is an ex-library issue and may contain stickers or identification stamps, we will state it as such.
Excellent - Like new. Item appears almost unmarked and in top condition. Possibly never read. Very minimal traces of use and handling.
Very Good - A small amount of wear. Book has no tears to the text or binding. The book shows evidence of being carefully read, carefully owned. A small amount of flaws by be present such as: light soil, a previous owner's name, slight spine lean, a bookplate.
Good - Your average used and handled book. Some wear, some pages or cover may be folded. Book may have some tears to the text or binding. The book shows evidence of being read, and remains a sound reading copy. Flaws that may be present: soiling, chipped spines, rubbing to binding, ownership markings, etc.
Fair - Noticeable wear, possibly markings, foxing, and pages may be folded or torn but still readable. A worn book.
Past its Best By Date - A well worn book, with major flaws, quite often, a good many of them such as faded and creased covers and binding, pages with edge tears, etc. ownership markings and possibly environmental damage such as water or mildew residue. Usually described as a "reader's copy" or a "working copy." Possibly a former public library copy, if so, stated as such. An interesting item for the collector. As is.
